How does Finder work?

How are the words entered in the search box processed? #

The search engine finds products that contain the words you type in your query. The last word you type (or the only one, if you type just one) is interpreted as a “prefix”.
Example:

  • If you search for “whole milk wit”, the word “wit” will be searched as a prefix and will also return results such as “without lactose”.
  • If you search for “red apple”, products containing both words will be shown.

Does the search engine understand misspellings or variations of words? #

Yes. The system stores prefixes of words, which helps ensure results do not change significantly if you type singular or plural, masculine or feminine forms. It also tolerates small spelling mistakes.
Example: if you type “tomats”, results for “tomatoes” will also be shown.

How are the results ordered? #

By default, products are sorted by relevance: the more times the searched word appears in a product, the higher its score and the higher it will appear in the results.
Example: if you search for “cookies”, a product that has “cookies” in its name and category will appear before another where it only appears in the description.

Can I change the order of the results? #

Yes. From the search settings you can change the default order:

  • Relevance (highest to lowest).
  • Price ascending (lowest to highest) or Price descending (highest to lowest).
  • Stock descending (products with the highest availability first).

What are “search fields”? #

These are the product data fields used in searches (such as name, category, description, etc.). Each field can have a different weight, which determines how much importance it has in the final score.
Example: if more weight is given to the category, when searching for “cereal”, a product in the “Cereals” category will appear higher in the results.

Can rules be created to modify the order of the results? #

Yes. The search engine allows sorting rules to prioritize certain products. For example, it can be configured so that products from certain categories always appear above the rest.

What are synonyms in the search engine? #

Synonyms allow the search engine to understand different ways of naming the same product. There are two ways to configure them:

  1. Search all: synonyms are added to expand results. Example: when searching for “soft drink”, it will also search for “soda”, and results from both terms will be shown.
  2. Word replacement: one term is replaced with another to unify results. Example: when searching for “soda”, it is replaced with “soft drink”, so the actual search performed will be “soft drink”.

Can results for certain searches be customized? #

Yes. It is possible to create rules that manually add or remove products in specific searches.
Example: if a supermarket wants to highlight a new product when searching for “rice”, it can be configured to always appear among the first results.
